Xwede means “God” in Kurmanji (often called Ezdiki by many Yazidis), an Indo-Iranian language with roots going back many centuries in regions of eastern Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia, which Yazidis adopted over time and often refer to as Ezdiki to emphasize their distinct identity. Speaking the same language does not define ethnicity — especially as Yazidis have increasingly faced pressure to align with narratives that do not represent them.
